The Indian Olympic Association has volunteered to host the Shooting and Archery events in India for CWG 2022. The Games are scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England. Organizing Committee of 2022 Commonwealth Games had omitted the disciplines of Shooting and Archery due logistic and cost escalations. The Indian Olympic Association will now be absorbing the expenses of the two events on their own.
In most edition of the Commonwealth Games, India gets many medals from Shooting and Archery. The CWG is a big event in the calendar for Indian shooters and archers. When the organising committee of CWG 2022, decided to skip the two disciplines, India had decided to boycott the Games itself. It was a big heartbreak for the Indian shooters and archers, who try for excellence at the CWG. Winning the yellow metal at the CWG is a step towards the Olympic team for most shooters and archers.
The gesture of the IOC has been appreciated in most quarters. The House of Commons which is the administrative custodian of the CWG has welcomed the move. Since the 2022 edition is held in England, so the House of Commons can impress upon the CGF Committee to accept India’s proposals.
India’s scaling down of its initial position of boycotting the Games has also been appreciated. Additionally they have expressed willingness to conduct the Shooting and Archery at their own cost. They will conduct the event in their country, thus relieving the CGF of logistic issues also. The medals earned in the disciplines in India will be added to the overall the CGF 2022 medal tally. India’s present approach is seen as a more conciliatory approach than a retaliatory one. The House of Commons is pushing CGF to accept the proposals from India. Shooters and Archers will be hoping for that.
